This is a hollow body acoustic electric kalimba with 23 keys. It spans an octave plus some, in the key of C major. Although it has 23 keys it doesn't have 23 different notes. Most of its keys duplicate notes already present.
These doubled keys vibrate sympathetically when you pluck the primary key. This leads to a richer, fuller sound in a process similar to that of a 12 string guitar.
The top is made from a crazy-quilt plywood TV tray, the sides are oak, and the back is hand selected birch plywood.
Because of this box's generous size the acoustic tone of this kalimba is very good. And because the pickup is carefully placed on the thin wood of the top the amplified sound is very strong and even.
